The Storm and Roosters will clash at ANZ Stadium on Sunday, September 30 on a day that will also feature the inaugural NRL women’s premiership grand final, to be contested by the Brisbane Broncos and Sydney Roosters.

Petty Politics Affecting People Impacted by the Fallen Banab Bridge

Petty politics and corruption is causing the people travelling into town from parts of Sumkar district and Bogia district. People travelling in far back as Keram and Angoram in the East Sepik Province are also adversely affected.

THE Banab Bridge in Madang Province will be restored in the next couple of months.
This was the assurance given by Works Minister Michael Nali to Sumkar Member Chris Nangoi who asked in Parliament yesterday why the bridge was taking too long to rebuild.
“Since the fall of the bridge in January, five months has gone with still no progress on the bridge, people are affected with the fall of the bridge, people from Bogia and Middle Ramu,” Mr Nangoi said.
The most affected include farmers who use the bridge as the only route to transport their local produce to the market in town, even PMVs and tradestore owners were affected, government services were not reaching the people, Mr Nangoi said.
Mr Nali in response said that the problem with the rebuilding of the bridge was that the contractor was finding it hard to bring the crane to do the pile driving for the bridge.
“It’s true it fell, it’s a 90-metre bridge a local contractor has been engaged, when the bridge fell there were issues with the locals including the temporary bridge, an expatriate was killed.
“We are preparing the money for the contractors to organise the crane to come and build the bridge; it will cost us quite a bit of money to do the work, it’s on track as soon as money is given by the end of the month the pile driving should start.”

K1mil paid for Banab Bridge replacement

BY DOROTHY MARKThe K1 million promised by Government for a replacement for the collapsed Banab Bridge in Madang has been released for work to start immediately.
Sumkar MP Chris Nangoi said yesterday the K1 million promised by Works and Implementation Minister Michael Nali was paid to the contractor to begin work. He said the payment was made yesterday.
Nali and Secretary David Wereh announced the funding last month when they visited Madang.
Banab Bridge collapsed under the weight of a semi-trailer carrying an excavator on the night of Jan 4. It links Madang and Bogia.
Wereh said work on the bridge would be a priority for Works.
Banab Bridge, known to many as SP Bridge, was built in 1962.
There was no maintenance done until it collapsed this year.
The steel beams of the bridge rusted over the years.
One side was bent long before the semi-trailer carrying the excavator forced it down.
Acting rural police station commander at Talidig, Ben Misob, said the collapse of the bridge caused chaos for thousands of passengers using the highway.
“The Madang-Bogia Highway is a national highway,” Misob said.
“The Banab Bridge is one of the main links of the highway.
“All sorts of people from the Highlands, Sepik, Bogia and the islands of Karkar, Bagbag and Manam use this highway for economic purposes.
“This has really affected economic activities here.”
Karkar and Bagbag islanders have to pass through the bridge to catch a boat ride from Kubugam and Megiar.
Nangoi said Police Mobile Squad 13 would be engaged to provide security for those putting up the new bridge.

Work on new Banab Bridge progressing

National

WORKS Minister Michael Nali says replacing the Banab Bridge in Madang is in progress and urged people asking for huge amounts of money from the travelling public accessing the bypass to stop.
He said that while another bridge had also collapsed in the same province at Bogia, the department was concentrating on the Banab Bridge. Nali was responding to Sumkar MP Chris Nangoi, who said people from Bogia, Middle Ramu and other parts of the province were affected by the bridge collapse and wanted the minister to give a clear statement on it as it was the fourth time he had asked the question.
Nali said opportunists were making money from the bypass and the innocent subsistence farmers were pressurising him to do something about the bridge.
He said he agreed with Nangoi and understood the struggles and hardship his people were facing after the bridge crashed.
Nali said the department was in the process of rebuilding the 90-metre replacement bridge.
